Smith, Scott. 4 Common Sense Tips for Creating Surveys that Work. Qualtrics. Web.
31 December. 2012. 06 March 2016.
Scott Smith, cofounder and contributing blogger to Qualtrics an online data collection and market analysis research tool, has submitted four tips for an effective survey. They are: keep it simple, use scales Whenever Possible, Keep Coded Values Consistent, and Explain Why. Keeping the survey simple and under 15 minutes allows the respondents to stay focused on the questions asked. Smith finds that scales in values from one to five give valuable quantitative metrics they surveyors are able to easily evaluate. Within the scales he suggests making all values consistent. In other words, if you have multiple questions that ask different questions make the most favorable answer a five and the least a one. Do so for all scalable questions for more accuracy in reporting. Smith says “Explaining Why” is important because it gives the respondents incentive. Express to the respondent the importance of his response and perhaps in some cases you may offer economic incentive.
